By: Nathan Moak
Atticus Finch is a fictional character from Harper Lee’s world famous novel “To Kill A Mockingbird”. He was born and raised in Maycomb County Alabama and grew up in a very racial area in the early 1900’s. Although many people in that area had strong beliefs on African Americans and racism, that didn't deter Atticus from becoming a lawyer that was and is known for defending African Americans and that he took a very humanitarian approach on being a lawyer. Atticus was also a father to two children, Jeremy “Jem” Finch and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Although many African Americans were unfairly trialed during this time period, Atticus was still able to win over the judges and jurors with his speeches of freedom and equality in many highly publicized criminal trials. Although Atticus is a fictional character many could relate to him as he was facing the same problems that people everyday where actually facing in real life back then and even sometimes still to this day. Some of his personal views and opinions include being very even-handed and never usually rethinks his position or opinion on an issue. He was also known for his strange approach on how he raises his children. Unlike other parents Atticus treats his children almost like adults, answering any and all questions they ask honestly. Hes also uses every opportunity he gets to teach them important life lessons while still not expecting too much from them as they are still children and it would be unfair to put extreme expectations as everyone makes mistakes but you learn as your do so. The one thing that Atticus focuses on teaching his children is too never take advantage of anyone no matter the situation. He does not take this topic lightly with anyone including his children. Many of Atticus’ family and friends loved him for his many views and opinions as he always put others before him, and also because he was never “two faced”, as he acted the same in public as he did at home and he never acted differently with anyone on any subject and always stuck with his own opinion. Some of his personal beliefs about the justices system is that it should be colour blind and to look at everyone as an equal. To defend an African American you must do what Atticus does and defend him because he is a human being, and that you sincerely believe he is innocent instead of defending him just because African Americans were at a disadvantage at that time in history, instead of just for publicity. For example when Atticus defended Tom in the Tom Robinson case he knew before the trial even began that he would lose but that didn't matter as in Atticus’ opinion Tom was innocent so he gave Tom the strongest defence that he was able to give and not because he was African American but because he believes him. Some reasons Atticus is such a loved father and a successful lawyer is because of the way he treats people. Unlike a vast majority of the people around his time Atticus did’nt treat people differently because of the way they act, talk, or look or whether they make good or bad decisions. For example one of the main people that helps Atticus raise his children is an African American woman witch surprises a lot of people who meet Atticus.Even when people purposely insult Atticus or disagree with him he will stay calm and controlled while still expressing his thoughts. It is easy to see how and why Atticus Finch is such an Iconic character as he has had a huge impact on the world and the justice system and just for being a good human being, and will always be remembered for standing up for those who no one would defend.
